History of PEM® Surface Creations

PEM® was first developed in 1997 for the golf industry during the soft spike golf shoe movement. The Golf Course Superintendent was desperate to find slip resistant flooring for the problem of golfer slips and falls on bridges, steps, walkways, and cart paths. PEM® proved to be the answer! Since 1999, over 2,000 golf courses have purchased PEM® to provide slip resistance, and reduce the risk of injury from slips and falls on the course.

Our accomplishments in the golf industry has lead to similar success for slip resistance in the aquatic, marine, equestrian, and playground industries.

In the late 1990's, the aquatic industry quickly became one of our most popular markets for slip resistant flooring and comfort on locker room floors, pool decks, shower floors, restrooms, bridges, steps, and walkways. The positive response for PEM® slip resistant flooring and comfort in these areas led to new applications on pool surfaces, splash pads, spray parks, zero depth entry areas, and underwater fall zones. Major cruise lines, YMCA's, military bases, park and recreation departments, campgrounds, hotels, resorts, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, high schools, colleges, universities, private swim clubs, country clubs, and major theme parks, have all utilized PEM® as their primary choice for comfort and slip resistant flooring.

We were honored to be chosen to provide the slip resistant flooring for the 2004 US Olympic Trials - Long Beach, CA., the 2004 FINA World Swimming Championships - Indianapolis, IN, the 2005 FINA World Aquatic Championships - Montreal, QB, and the 2008 US Olympic Swimming Trials - Omaha, NE. Over 125,000 sq. ft of PEM® slip resistant flooring was utilized at these prestigious events to provide slip resistance and comfort to the athletes.

For over 12 years, the marine industry has utilized PEM® slip resistant flooring as marine flooring for safety and comfort on docks, boat decks, swim platforms, engine room floors, and rack storage boat bunk systems. Houseboat owners love PEM® for use on their upper sun decks. Fisherman and scuba divers have utilized PEM® slip resistant flooring to reduce movement of equipment inside the boat, while also providing slip resistance and barefoot comfort. Marina owners use PEM® slip resistant flooring on their boat docks to reduce their liability from falls, splinters, and hot surfaces. PEM® also provides an excellent covering on bunk rails to protect boat gel coats when placed in dry rack storage systems.

The equestrian industry has utilized the slip resistant flooring in stalls to keep stall floors level. In paddock areas to control mud, in wash racks and walkways to provide slip resistance and comfort. The mat's lightweight durable construction, porous design, and wall to wall installation, make it an excellent choice for equestrian flooring.

In 2002, PEM® was chosen as the exclusive top layer of the SMARTE Playground Surfacing System. PEM® provides a slip resistant and wheelchair accessible flooring for the SMARTE Playground Surfacing System that exceeds all ASTM requirements for Head Impact Attenuation (ASTM 1292-99) and Wheelchair Accessibility (ASTM 1951-99). The SMARTE Playground Surface System combines the resilient durability of shredded recycled tires, with the durability of specially formulated PEM® slip resistant flooring, to form an innovative and unique protective playground surface.

Since 1997, PEM® Surface Creations has grown to become the premium choice for slip resistance and comfort from simple slip resistant flooring applications, to major aquatic events throughout the world, as well as every application in between. The soft construction and unique porous looping design creates a durable textured surface to reduce slippage in well traveled areas and to provide padding on points of harmful contact. PEM® slip resistant flooring is produced in many thicknesses and colors to meet the requirements of your specific application.
